Create your medical device inventory online

If your practice runs active, non-implantable medical devices, you must keep an inventory of them for each site (§ 14 Abs. 1 MPBetreibV). The health office can ask for it at an inspection. List your devices here with every required field, then print the inventory or save it as CSV. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Nothing you type leaves your browser. The inventory is remembered on this device only when you click Remember on this device, and Delete saved data removes it.

Checked against § 14 MPBetreibV ("Zuletzt geändert durch Art. 1 V v. 31.10.2025 I Nr. 263") on 24 October 2026. Guidance, not legal advice.

Checklist

Required fields in the inventory

§ 14 Abs. 2 MPBetreibV lists what the inventory must show for each device. The tool marks every row that still misses one.

  1. 1Designation, type, lot code or serial number and year of purchase (§ 14 Abs. 2 Nr. 1 MPBetreibV)
  2. 2Name or company and address of the manufacturer or its authorised representative, or of the importer if the manufacturer has neither a seat in the EU nor a representative (§ 14 Abs. 2 Nr. 2 MPBetreibV)
  3. 3Your internal identification number, if you use one (§ 14 Abs. 2 Nr. 3 MPBetreibV)
  4. 4Location and organisational unit (§ 14 Abs. 2 Nr. 4 MPBetreibV)

Which devices belong in it?

Every active, non-implantable medical device at the site (§ 14 Abs. 1 MPBetreibV). Active means the device runs on electricity or another energy source, not on body power or gravity (Article 2(4) of the EU Medical Device Regulation, MDR).

Belongs in it

  • Ultrasound devices
  • Electrotherapy and TENS devices
  • Bioresonance devices
  • Laser and light therapy devices
  • Powered treatment couches
  • Powered inhalers and nebulisers

Does not belong in it

  • Manual instruments
  • Stethoscope
  • Scales without a power source
  • Blood pressure cuff without a power source
  • Implants

Not listed: devices a third party supplies on your instruction that become the patient's property, for example a prescribed home device (§ 3 Abs. 4 MPBetreibV).

Paper or electronic

Any medium is allowed, paper or electronic, as long as the entries can be made readable within a reasonable time (§ 14 Abs. 3 MPBetreibV). A printout or a CSV file on your computer both work, if you can show it when asked.

Good to know

Questions about the medical device inventory

Short answers to what colleagues ask most.

Who has to keep a medical device inventory?

Every operator of active, non-implantable medical devices, for each site (§ 14 Abs. 1 MPBetreibV). If you run your own practice, the operator is you. A device a third party supplies on your instruction that becomes the patient's property is not part of it (§ 3 Abs. 4 MPBetreibV).

Which devices belong in the inventory?

Devices that run on electricity or another energy source and are not implanted, for example ultrasound, TENS, laser or bioresonance devices. Manual instruments and devices without a power source do not. The list above shows typical examples.

What must the inventory contain?

For each device: designation, type, lot code or serial number, year of purchase, the manufacturer's name and address, your internal ID if you have one, and the location (§ 14 Abs. 2 MPBetreibV). Next check and note are optional extras.

How is the inventory different from the Medizinproduktebuch?

The inventory lists all your active devices in one table. The medical device logbook (Medizinproduktebuch) is a separate record per device, only for the devices in Annexes 1 and 2 of the regulation. It records instruction, checks, faults and incident reports, and you keep it five years after the device is taken out of service (§ 13 Abs. 3 MPBetreibV).

How long do I have to keep the inventory?

The regulation sets no retention period for the inventory. It is a living list that must be current and readable at an inspection. When you take a device out of service, add the date in the note instead of deleting the row. The five years in § 13 Abs. 3 apply to the Medizinproduktebuch, not to the inventory.
